HP Novels to be added to UK Schools' Syllabus
posted by Heather 4-30-08
Times of India reports: "Kids in the UK can now look forward to studying something besides Shakespeare and Dickens in school.
For they will soon have the adventures of Harry Potter and his friends to sift through. However, the decision to add Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone from J K Rowling’s bestselling series to the A-level English syllabus has caused a bit of a row in the country, with experts saying the move will “dumb” down exams.
From next year onwards, school kids will have to pen a 1,500-word essay comparing Rowling and another writer, as well as an 800-word story inspired by the book."

From the Associated Press: "British author J.K. Rowling is expected to appear as a witness at a New York trial next month, in a case called to settle an intellectual property dispute involving her Harry Potter books.
Rowling and Warner Bros., the studio behind the movie versions of the books, are suing US publisher RDR Books over an encyclopedia devoted to the boy wizard and other characters from the phenomenally successful series.
A New York Federal District Court Judge on Monday ordered the case to go to trial on April 14. A lawyer for RDR Books said Rowling was expected to appear to give evidence in the case." Full article
HP author had suicidal thoughts
posted by Heather 3-25-08
CNN reports: "Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling has revealed she thought of killing herself while penniless and suffering from depression as a single mother, according to a report in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper.
J.K. Rowling is now one of the world's richest women due to the success of her Harry Potter books.
At the time, Rowling had separated from her first husband and was living in a cramped apartment with her baby daughter.
She was able to afford the rent only after a friend paid the £600 ($1,189) that she needed, the newspaper quoted her as telling a student reporter at Edinburgh University.
"We're talking suicidal thoughts here, we're not talking 'I'm a little bit miserable,'" Rowling said." Read More...JK Official site updates

USA Today's Book of the Year is...

...Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!
From USA Today: "This year's choice had to be the final Harry Potter book. The reasons are as varied as the different wizards' wands found in Diagon Alley. There were the numbers: Hallows sold a record-breaking 11.5 million copies in the USA during its first 10 days on sale in July. Then there was the pre-publication hysteria: Would Harry die? Could the world's children... and a lot of adults... handle it? Was an early version posted on the Web the real thing? (Yes.) Months after the book's publication, Rowling triggered controversy by revealing that Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore was gay. The blogosphere went wild. But none of that matters. Hallows is the book of the year because Rowling gave her story an ending that was as graceful, unpredictable and satisfying as the series itself. She reaffirmed that magic can exist when someone opens a great book and enters a world created from words on paper. She made us believe that the imagination... like her own little wizard, now all grown up...still lives."
